PODCAST: All Things Cancer – Why Was Half This Village Dying of Cancer — And No One Stopped It?
A podcast from the
National Foundation for Cancer Research.’s All Things Cancer. In this episode, Dr. Sujuan Ba speaks with physician-scientist Dr. Michele Carbone about a journey that began in small villages in Cappadocia, Turkey, and ultimately saved lives across continents.

Dr. Carbone was invited to visit villages where nearly half the population was dying from mesothelioma, a rare cancer of the lung lining. What he uncovered was far more complex than environmental exposure alone. Through years of persistence, skepticism from peers, and relentless follow-up, he identified a hereditary mutation in the BAP1 gene that dramatically increases cancer risk.

PODCAST:Asbestos.com – The Effects of Federal Funding on Cancer Research

Dr. Catherine Perrault , Chief Medical Officer of  the Mesothelioma Center’s Medical Outreach Program interviews Dr. Michele Carbone. They discuss the impact of federal funding on cancer research, specifically its progressive decline over the last 25 years. This episode particularly explores how the decrease in funding affects all cancers, but rare cancers like mesothelioma are disproportionately impacted because funding prioritizes more common malignancies like lung, breast and prostate cancer.
